A Journey Through Mathematics

For Ryan Loxton (Class of 2000), the path from All Saints' College to becoming a Professor of Mathematics was not a straightforward one.

After graduating from All Saints', Ryan began an engineering degree but found the transition to university challenging and ultimately decided to step away from his studies. After spending time in the workforce, he returned to university with a renewed focus, this time pursuing mathematics. The decision would shape the course of his future career.

Ryan went on to complete an honours degree and PhD, including four months studying in Hong Kong, and has since established himself as a leading researcher in the fields of mathematics, optimisation and data science. Today, he is the Director of the Centre for Optimisation and Decision Science at Curtin University, where he leads a team using advanced mathematics and data science techniques to solve real-world engineering problems for major mining and resources organisations and government agencies.

Earlier this year, Ryan returned to All Saints' College to participate in the inaugural Year 12 Networking Breakfast, sharing insights into careers in engineering, mathematics and data science with the graduating cohort. Reflecting on the experience, Ryan said, "The event energised me and reminded me of the responsibility we all share to nurture and mentor the next generation." His willingness to return and support current students reflects the strong connection many Old Saints maintain with the College long after graduation.

Despite his many professional achievements, one of Ryan's favourite memories of All Saints' remains a simple one: spending recess and lunchtime kicking the football on the grass near the Principal's and Pastor's houses.

We were delighted to welcome Ryan back to the College and look forward to following the next chapter of his remarkable career.
