Maddy Devenish (Class of 2013) 'From Stage to Service'

Since graduating from ASC in 2013, Maddy Devenish embarked on an inspiring and evolving professional journey. After completing high school, she was accepted into WAAPA, where she pursued a Bachelor of Music with a major in classical vocal performance. Maddy's time there was marked by memorable experiences, including performing in several opera productions and collaborating with exceptional musicians and teachers. However, after just over two years, Maddy realised that a career in singing was not her ultimate path.
Following this revelation, she shifted gears and enrolled at Curtin University to study a Bachelor of Social Work. From the very first lecture, Maddy felt a strong connection to the course and the profession, finding a sense of purpose and belonging. Graduating at the end of 2020, Maddy has since been working full time as a Social Worker, taking on a variety of roles. These have included working in a primary school setting and supporting women and children affected by family and domestic violence at a refuge. Currently, she serves as both an NDIS Specialist Support Coordinator and a Social Work Program Coordinator, supporting people with disabilities who face complex challenges such as homelessness, substance use, and interactions with the justice system. While the work is deeply challenging, it remains incredibly meaningful and rewarding to her.
One of Maddy's proudest academic achievements was earning the highest mark in her cohort for the Social Work with Children and Young People unit during her undergraduate degree - a notable accomplishment given her earlier struggles with academic confidence in high school.
In 2024, Maddy was accepted into the Master of Forensic Mental Health program at Griffith University, where she's studying part-time alongside her full-time work. Maddy says that she finds forensic mental health fascinating as it closely aligns with her passion for complex case work.
Outside of her professional life, Maddy enjoys a calm and quiet lifestyle. She married her wife in 2023, and much of their free time is spent at home with their two cats. Together, they enjoy watching true crime documentaries.
Reflecting on her time at ASC, one of Maddy's favourite memories comes from her final year in Year 12, particularly serving as Performing Arts Captain. That year marked the opening of the Performing Arts Centre, a special milestone which Maddy was proud to be part of.
Maddy always felt supported and inspired by the Performing Arts staff, and the experiences from that time left a lasting and meaningful impression on her.
Congratulations on your achievements Maddy!
