Old Saint, Alisa Xu (Class of 2020), is celebrating a major milestone in her creative journey with her acceptance into the prestigious Master of Fine Arts in Film and Television Production program at the University of Southern California (USC). Recognised globally as one of the top film schools, USC’s School of Cinematic Arts has shaped generations of filmmakers, and Alisa’s acceptance represents an exciting and transformative step toward realising her dreams of becoming a filmmaker.

Alisa’s passion for film and storytelling first blossomed during her high school years, particularly under the mentorship of her dedicated Arts teacher, Ms Zoe Parker.

When Alisa arrived in Australia, she faced the challenges of adjusting to a new culture, language, and academic environment. As a non-native English speaker, the theory-heavy classes were a significant hurdle. However, in the supportive and inspiring atmosphere of the drama department, Alisa found not only a safe space to grow but also a teacher who was committed to her success. Ms Parker played a pivotal role in Alisa’s development, tutoring her personally, offering guidance in performance and directing, and instilling a strong belief in her abilities.

This mentorship proved to be a catalyst in Alisa’s journey toward filmmaking. Ms Parker’s encouragement helped Alisa build her confidence and sharpen her skills in directing and storytelling. As Alisa reflected, it was Ms Parker’s belief in her that fueled her ambition to pursue a career in the arts—a decision that would ultimately lead to her acceptance into one of the world’s most renowned film schools.

For her USC application, Alisa created and directed a short film titled Sad Midnight Club. The film was not only a personal expression of her creativity but also a professional showcase of her abilities in screenwriting and visual storytelling. It became the centrepiece of her application portfolio, demonstrating her unique voice as a filmmaker. Alisa also underwent a formal interview with Associate Professor Richard Burton from USC’s Practice of Cinematic Arts, where she further impressed the selection committee with her passion for the craft. Her short film, which highlights her talent for weaving powerful narratives, can be viewed here.

Now, with her acceptance to USC, Alisa is filled with excitement and anticipation for the next phase of her journey. Moving to Los Angeles will bring a mix of academic challenges, cultural experiences, and personal growth. Alisa is especially thrilled about the opportunity to live in one of the world’s most vibrant creative hubs. Alongside the new academic demands of USC, she is looking forward to embracing the challenges of settling into a new city—finding her first apartment in downtown LA and exploring the endless opportunities in the film industry.

Alisa’s journey is a powerful reminder of the impact that mentorship and hard work can have on shaping one’s future. It is also a testament to the importance of following one’s passion, no matter the obstacles. Alisa’s story reflects not only her dedication and perseverance but also the lasting influence of the support and encouragement she received from her teacher, Ms Zoe Parker, and the All Saints’ College community.

As Alisa steps into this new chapter, she carries with her the confidence and drive to make her mark on the world of film.

Best of luck Alisa! We are so proud of you!
